Road closures, put in place following a fire at a derelict former school, have been lifted.

Flames swept through the Grade II listed Newell House in Cornhill, Sherborne, on 26 April, causing most of its roof to collapse.

Scaffolding and hoardings were erected and emergency road closures were put in place while contractors worked on the site.

Sherborne Town Council said Cornhill would reopen on Wednesday after parts of the building that were "dangerous" had been "safely removed". The A30 at Kitt Hill reopened on Friday.

More than 35 firefighters from eight stations were sent to tackle the fire at the three-storey former independent school which broke out at about 18:30 BST on 26 April.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service worked through the night to put the fire out. No injuries were reported.

Announcing the reopening of Cornhill, Dorset Council added: "We would like to thank residents, businesses and road users for their patience and cooperation while these essential safety works took place."
