Three independents stand for council election
Local Democracy Reporting ServiceIndependents standing in the local election say they are "determined to do their absolute best to represent the residents".
Voters will be heading to polling stations on 7 May to elect 15 councillors on North East Lincolnshire Council, one in each of the authority's wards.
Dawn Merryweather, Jack Hilton and Angela Greenfield are representing North East Lincolnshire Group. They are standing in the Freshney, Wolds and Yarborough wards.
The group's leader, councillor Steve Holland, said independent councillors brought "a lot of skills to the table" and were "very much not just a single issue group of people".
Holland said: "What you often see with the political parties is they will stand a candidate in every ward and, actually, some of those wards they're not serious about.
"Those candidates, they stand because they've had their arms twisted. They don't expect to win. They're what we call 'paper candidates'.
"What I would say is, we don't do that. The three candidates that we're standing are all determined to do their absolute best to represent the residents."
According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Holland has decided not to stand for re-election in Freshney, so he can prioritise the needs of his family.
However, he urged people to vote in the election.
"What I would say is, when you look at local services, often they have a greater impact than national elections.
"Because it determines roads, housing, your council tax, bins getting emptied, those local practical services that we rely on on a daily basis, are all decided in the town hall," he said.
"So, it's really important that you have people there that are going to work hard, represent people properly, and more importantly, listen to people."
