A busy city centre bridge has reopened after it was temporarily closed due to issues with its steel structure "overheating".

Bristol City Council urged drivers to avoid the Cumberland Basin, A4 Portway and Brunel Way A3029 as traffic built up while they worked to fix the fault with Plimsoll Bridge.

Fire crews could be seen using hoses to help cool the road surface after temperatures in the city topped 31C.

In a post on social media, the council thanked the public for "bearing with us while we work to cool down this overheated bridge".

Serious congestion was caused in March when the same bridge became stuck open but this has reportedly not happened this time.
