A man has been given a hospital order after fatally stabbing his brother at least 36 times.

Taylor Mitten, 23, admitted to killing his older brother Jack Mitten, 25, in Lindum Road, Worthing, on 3 September 2025, pleading guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility having initially been charged with murder.

After subsequently going on the run to avoid police, Mitten was eventually arrested three days later in Curzon Close, Worthing, after a public appeal.

Mitten, of Lindum Road, was given an indefinite hospital order at Lewes Crown Court, sitting in Brighton, on Thursday, while the murder charge was ordered to lie on file.

Sussex Police Det Ch Insp Mark Cullimore, the senior investigating officer on the case, said he wanted to thank "all of the officers and staff who have worked ceaselessly and diligently throughout this investigation and court proceedings, as well as the witnesses and members of the public who came forward to provide valuable information".

"Our thoughts continue to be with Jack's family during this unimaginably difficult time," he said.

"They will receive the full ongoing support of Sussex Police specialist trained officers during what continues to be a such a tragic time navigating a devastating loss."

Cullimore also called for privacy for the family "while they come to terms with the loss of their son, Jack, and the conclusion of these proceedings".

At the time of the attack, Mitten was on bail from the Crown Court for conspiracy to commit arson and other offences.
