Work to clear a "dangerous" fly-tip near a school in Leicester is taking too long, a volunteer litter picker has said.

Rubble and the apparent remains of a cannabis factory - including plants and fertiliser - have reportedly been seen dumped at a former car park in Hinckley Road.

Litter picker Adrian, who only wished to be referred to by his first name, described the site as a "blight" on the area, adding its proximity to Richard III Infant and Nursery School had caused him concern.

Leicester City Council said it was aware of the issue and had been dealing with the leaseholders, who have responsibility for the land.

The site was previously used as a car park for two banks, but is now fenced off.

Adrian said: "I don't think anyone's listening about the state of the site, but it's taken too long."

He added: "If this was in the middle of the countryside, it would bother me, but not as much, but the location and the fact it's so close to a children's school is what makes me want some action.

"It's a blight on the neighbourhood and it's dangerous.

"There are parts of a cannabis grow, the remains of plants, chemicals and fertilisers with the lightbulbs used - and there's asbestos and oil.

"That's only the stuff I can see.

"What's in all the black bags is anyone's guess."

Adrian said he contacted Leicester City Council in March and had been told something would be done.

A city council spokesperson said: "We are in contact with the leaseholders of the property who retain responsibility for the land and car park.

"We have been assured they are in the process of arranging the removal of the waste and we will continue to monitor the situation closely."

The property agents for the leaseholders have been approached for comment.
