A frozen food company will produce tens of millions of potato waffles every year at its factory in Suffolk after investing in a new production line.

Nomad Foods, which owns Birds Eye, will spend £2.2m to increase the number of waffles it makes at its Lowestoft site to nearly 45 million a year.

It comes after an additional £12m was recently given to the factory to invest in chicken processing, and a pledge to build a wind turbine on the site.

Eduardo Bachiega, Nomad Foods's chief supply officer, said the investment was testament to the firm's "long-term commitment to UK food manufacturing".

"We're directly responding to consumer demand for household favourites, such as potato waffles, that are already being manufactured 24/7 at the factory," he said.

"At a time of increasing pressure on global food systems, as well as ongoing cost-of-living challenges for consumers, we continue to invest in our operations."

The Lowestoft site opened in 1949 and spans more than 25 acres.

According to the company, it is the largest private sector employer in the area.
