Woman, 60, to compete in World Hyrox Championships
Justin Dealey/BBCA 60-year-old woman said she was "delighted" to have been picked to represent Great Britain at the Hyrox World Championships.
Martina McIntyre, from Luton, will travel to Stockholm in Sweden to compete at the event which starts on Thursday.
She initially got into the sport, which involves running and a mixture of workout stations, after retiring as a midwife at Luton and Dunstable Hospital in 2020.
"I was a bit shocked when I got the call, but delighted to be taking part," she said.
"I've been training hard. I'm nervous, but I'm looking forward to going out there and doing my best."
McIntyre became a personal fitness instructor and gym teacher after retiring and now works at a gym in Luton.
"They've encouraged and supported me and brought me down avenues I never thought I'd go to," she added.
ContributedShe had enjoyed running and while training other people for Hyrox, she thought it could be something for her to also try.
The race involves eight legs, each with a 1km run followed by a fitness exercise such as sled pushes, sled pulls, rowing and kettlebell walks.
McIntyre competed at Olympia in London earlier in the year where she received a time of one hour and 23 minutes - winning her age category.
Soon after she was invited to the world championships.
"I'm with some top athletes," she said of the upcoming event.
"Just to go and represent is the achievement."
