A historic footbridge in Invergarry is to be closed after it was deemed unsafe to cross.

Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) said inspections of the category B listed Black Bridge had identified rot in decking boards and deteriorating metal work.

Beginning on Monday work will begin to assess options for repair, replacement or removal of the 130-year-old structure.

It is often used by walkers, children going to school and visitors going to a nearby youth hostel.

FLS said it appreciate that the closure of the bridge would be disappointing and disruptive for local residents and visitors, but public safety was paramount.

The organisation said it may seek external funding for repairs or replacement, or for recording the bridge for posterity before the structure is removed.
