In pictures: Cardboard pier and food festival fun

Hundreds of people helped to build and later squash a cardboard pier art piece in Weston-super-Mare

Work took place on two piers - albeit, only one which was real - in Weston-super-Mare this week.

Congratulations are in order for one man in Gloucestershire who grew a world record-breaking giant cucumber.

And the first signs of autumn are starting to show across the county as we enter the final few months of the year.

Bristol

The red wall: Finished in time for this season, there is a new mural towering over Bristol City fans as they walk the final few yards to Ashton Gate for home games. Co-ordinated by art4fans.uk, it evokes defensive heroes of the club's past and was made by local artists Inkie and Jody, among others.

Cooking up a storm: FŌDA, a "Festival of Food Ideas", brought together independent food and drink producers and gave youngsters a chance to try their hand at cooking. It was headed up by Josh Eggleton from the Pony Chew Valley, with Team Canteen.

Picture pier-fect: A giant cardboard pier - based on Birnbeck Pier, which can be seen in the background - was created by hundreds of volunteers using 2,000 boxes and 23.6 miles of sticky tape. It eventually fell victim to strong coastal winds and was squashed and recycled.

Play on: Classical music fans gathered at the Bristol Beacon on Thursday night as the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra launched its performance cycle of Beethoven's Symphonies, under the title Road to Joy!

Good progress: Restoration work is well under way on Birnbeck Pier. A quarter of the Grade II* listed structure is now complete, with the remainder of the project on course to be completed by next year.

Time to play: The National Padel Championships took place in Bristol this week and brought together the country's leading players as they competed against each other for the coveted title.

Gloucestershire

Record-breaking: Graham Barratt from Gloucestershire won in the longest cucumber category at the National Giant Vegetables Championship with a plant measuring a whopping 7.598m (24.6 feet).

Gameday: Gloucester fans who headed to Kingsholm on Saturday were rewarded by an emphatic win - a 48-0 thumping of Harlequins.

Preparing for take-off: The US air force's planes carried on taking off from RAF Fairford as a major incident was declared and a major counter-terrorism probe was launched.

The end of an era: A final evening of events was held on Thursday at Dowty Sports and Social Club in Gloucester before the venue closed its doors for the final time after 66 years.
