A man has been jailed for more than three years after £200,000 of cannabis was found in the back of a van deemed to be overweight.

Gjok Ndrevetaj, 33, from Southend-on-Sea, was stopped in a white Mercedes Sprinter after police spotted the vehicle travelling southbound on the A1 at Norman Cross on 2 March.

Police said he told officers the vehicle was carrying commercial waste, but officers found eight boxes containing cannabis as well as remnants of a cannabis factory.

Ndrevetaj was sentenced to three years and four months in prison at Huntingdon Crown Court on Tuesday, having pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of cannabis.

Det Con Natalia Bochnacka, of Cambridgeshire Police, said: "This case highlights how a routine stop for an overweight vehicle can uncover much more serious criminality.

"The discovery of the cannabis alongside the remnants of a cannabis factory demonstrates the scale of the operation.

"We are committed to disrupting the supply of illegal drugs and bringing those responsible before the courts."
