A section of the A1(M) has been closed in both directions following a "serious collision", National Highways has said.

The major route has been closed since about 23:00 BST on Sunday between junction 62 near Durham and junction 63 near Chester-le-Street.

The North East Ambulance Service said it had taken two men - one in a critical condition - to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

Durham Police warned motorists to expect the road to be closed "for some time".

National Highways said diversions had been put in place while crash investigators were working at the scene.
