Youths caught trespassing on closed school grounds

Youths wearing balaclavas were caught trespassing on the grounds of a closed private school, police have said.

The six people were attempting to gain entry through a window at Leweston School, near Sherborne, on Thursday afternoon, Dorset Police said.

Officers attended and located the youths before contacting their parents or guardians, who then came to collect them. One was taken home by police.

The century-old private school posted a shock announcement on its website this week that it would not reopen after half term.

The Catholic boarding and day school wrote: "We are very sorry for what this means for our pupils, their families and our staff, and for how little notice we have been able to give."

The school's alumni include actress Kristin Scott Thomas and Baroness Dido Harding, who ran the government's Covid-19 Test and Trace programme in England.
