A bridge is set to close for up to three weeks while "essential" repair work is carried out.

Peel Gill Bridge, on the B530 between Unthank and Sebergham in Cumbria, will close on Monday to allow for work on its structural integrity.

Westmorland and Furness Council, which is carrying out the work, said vital repairs were needed to the arch barrels of the bridge.

The authority said the work would require a large number of vehicles and equipment, meaning there would not be sufficient room for traffic to pass safely. Access for pedestrians, dismounted cyclists and emergency vehicles will be maintained during the closure.

A signed diversion for vehicles will be in place via the A595, Carlisle Southern Bypass, A6, C3012 and unrestricted sections of the B5305.

The council's cabinet member for highways, Peter Thornton, said: "We recognise that these works will cause some inconvenience to road users and local residents.

"However, these measures are necessary to ensure the safety of the workforce, bridge users, and the travelling public while these essential repairs are undertaken."
