Greene King said trading had ceased at The Billesley as it considered "the future of the site"

Community groups that relied on a pub to host their events have described its sudden closure as "devastating".

The Billesley in Kings Heath, Birmingham, had said it was closing early on Sunday at 15:00 BST as it prepared for "essential maintenance" for a week, with work starting on 13 July.

However, local group Crafting Voices Choir said when members arrived on Monday morning for rehearsals, they found the pub's doors locked, its car park closed, and metal shutters being placed on windows by contractors.

Brewery Greene King confirmed that trading had "ceased" at the pub, with the "future of the site" being considered and options available to the company under review.

The choir said singing was the "highlight of people's week" and the pub provided them with a "nice place" to rehearse.

But turning up on Monday, there was a "horrible atmosphere" at the closed venue, leaving some members "very, very upset" by the change in routine.

They were offered a temporary room in Kings Heath Park by Birmingham City Council to continue their Monday session. The group is now looking for a new permanent venue.

The Billesley has been home to the Billesley Rock Club for more than five years

Billesley Rock Club, which has hosted events at the pub for more than five years, said it was in a "massive state of shock" over the closure.

They had initially cancelled gigs during the next few weeks while work was due to be carried out at the pub, adding all bands would be contacted regarding their shows in due course.

"We have put our hearts and souls into the club over the past few years and have met some lovely people, and we would like to thank all the bands and customers for their love and support," they said.

The club's team added that it needed time to "reflect on our future" and would send updates when able.

'Second home to many'

Hundreds of comments on Facebook praised the club, now left without a home.

"Absolutely devastated reading this," said one user. "I'm genuinely in shock. The Billesley isn't just another venue, it's been a second home to so many of us in the rock scene.

"Some of my favourite memories, gigs and friendships have come from that stage and those nights."

Greene King said it was aware that the pub's closure was "disappointing news to the local community" and thanked people for visiting over the years.

"We are working closely with our team at The Billesley to find alternative roles at our other pubs where possible," it added.
