A police community support officer (PCSO) has been praised for saving a toddler who was choking on a sweet.

Kenny Lewis used his first aid training when he came across Roxy in Bilston, Wolverhampton, who was on a shopping trip with her mother and grandmother.

In a statement, West Midlands Police (WMP) said: "Her mum and nan were understandably panicked as the little girl struggled to breathe."

It added the family was "left hugely relieved and incredibly grateful for Kenny's actions after what could have been a tragedy".

Describing him as a "well-known and well-loved" officer always ready with a smile and a chat, the force said Lewis was on a routine patrol when he came across the family.

He quickly dislodged the sweet and helped Roxy breathe again.

The incident happened in Febraury, but the family recently caught up with the officer in the town centre where it happened.

The PCSO has served for 16 years, patrolling The Lunt before moving on to Bilston.

The force said he was a "familiar and reassuring presence in the community" and, it added, a "true local hero".
