A bakery owner says roadworks outside her shop are affecting footfall.

Izzy Bone, who owns Petite Bakery on the corner of The Weir, in Hessle, said the roadworks were "not a pretty sight" and had restricted access to the shop, which had made things "really tough" for her business.

Traffic management was expected to remain in place until Friday, East Riding of Yorkshire Council said.

A spokesperson added: "We want to thank local businesses, shoppers and residents for bearing with us while we carry out these essential improvements, which will be finished soon."

The council said temporary traffic lights were in place on The Weir to allow for a safe temporary walkway while the work to improve Prestongate continued.

Five parking spaces had been temporarily suspended but would be reinstated once the work was completed, the authority added.

Bone said people had not been able to park outside the shop, which had stopped customers from going in before work.

She said: "It's not a pretty sight for everyone to see - the yellow barriers.

"It's been quite stressful because, obviously in a bakery, you need to prep and bake it. You don't know how much to do because you don't want leftovers."

Bone posted on social media to remind customers the shop was still open and asked for support while the work continued.

She said: "Since that post, we've had loads of people coming in and saying that they've seen the post and it's pushed them to come in more."

Barista Abbie Paul, who travels to work from Hull, said it had taken her longer to get to work and people would need to plan their journeys better.

She said: "The bakery does do well, I do think it's quite individual.

"I think people are willing to travel to the bakery but the traffic does just add a little bit more of a barrier to get here."

The council said the temporary traffic signals would be removed for the Bank Holiday weekend and reinstalled afterwards if needed.
