Warning of six weeks of work on A82 in Fort William

Work to resurface three sections of the A82 in Fort William is expected to take six weeks to complete, Bear Scotland has warned.

The road maintenance company said the work would be done in three phases starting on 10 May, with road crews operating overnight from 19:00 to 06:00.

It said no work would be done on Friday or Saturday nights or from 18 to 21 May.

Bear Scotland's north west design manager, Steve Taylor, said the resurfacing was essential and would provide a "significant upgrade" to the road.

The first phase of the work will be between Nevis Bank roundabout and Belford Hospital, before moving onto North Road near the town's retail park and then to the West End roundabout.

West Chamber of Commerce chief executive Frazer Coupland said residents and visitors should expect delays to their journeys.

He told BBC Scotland News: "If you are trying to start shifts or at the end of a shift, or going to a doctor appointment, it's a massive inconvenience."

The A82 is a key route linking the Highlands with central Scotland.

Taylor, of Bear Scotland, said new road markings would also be installed as part of the improvements.

He added: "We would like to thank road users, residents and local businesses for their patience while these important improvements are carried out."
