New scenic route opened to the end of West Highland Way
The Highland CouncilWalkers finishing the West Highland Way now have a new scenic route to their end point in Fort William.
Highland Council has created and signposted a "high route" into the town centre allowing people to avoid the busy A82 trunk road.
It offers views over the head of Loch Linnhe and the surrounding hills, giving walkers a more enjoyable end to their journey.
The new path runs above Glen Nevis, skirting part of Cow Hill before descending into Fort William close to its leisure centre.
The West Highland Way, which runs for 96 miles (154 km) from Milngavie to Fort William, is internationally recognised as one of the world's top long-distance walks.
About 50,000 people complete the full route each year, with many more tackling shorter sections such as the Devil's Staircase.
Over 60% of walkers come from overseas, contributing an estimated £23m annually to the Scottish economy, according to surveys done for The West Highland Way User Report 2025.
Hikers can still use the previous route into Fort William if it better suits their plans.
