Woman dies in two-car crash near rugby club

A woman has died and three other people were taken to hospital after a crash involving two cars in Staffordshire.

Paramedics were called to Burntwood Way in Burntwood, near Lichfield, at 17:35 BST on Wednesday.

Three ambulances and an air ambulance were sent to the location near Burntwood Rugby Club.

A fifth person was assessed and discharged at the scene.

"Upon arrival crews discovered five occupants of the cars, one of whom, a woman, was in a serious condition and already receiving basic life support from bystanders," an ambulance service spokesperson said.

"Ambulance staff immediately began administering advanced life support but sadly, despite everyone's best efforts it became apparent nothing could be done to save the woman and she was confirmed dead at the scene."

They added two women and a man were treated for injuries that were not believed to be serious before being taken to Walsall Manor Hospital.

Staffordshire Police said the crash had involved a silver Mercedes 220 and a red Ford Fiesta, adding that an investigation was under way.

It also said the deceased's next of kin had been informed and would be supported by specialist officers.
