Shrewsbury river death inquest opens

An inquest has opened into the death of a 22-year-old man who died after going into the River Severn in the early hours one morning last month.

Brody Leach from Shrewsbury was last seen by friends at 03:54 BST on 26 June, close to the town's Porthill Bridge.

His body was discovered the following day and identified by his father.

The inquest was adjourned until 16 November.

The opening of the inquest, at Shrewsbury's Guildhall, was told Leach worked in the hospitality industry.

West Mercia Police, supported by West Mercia Search and Rescue, were called to the scene at about 04:10 BST on 26 June, where he was reported to have got into difficulty in the water.

Parts of the town's Quarry Park, the Porthill Bridge and Victoria Avenue were cordoned off during the search.
