Nottinghamshire breaks night-time temperature record

Nottinghamshire has recorded its highest-ever night-time temperature.

The Met Office has confirmed a temperature of 21.3C (70.3F) was recorded overnight from Tuesday into Wednesday, beating the previous record, which was 20.8C (69.44F) at Sutton Bonington in July 2016.

The temperature was recorded at the Nottingham Watnall weather station - 5.6 miles (9.0 km) from the city centre.

Gillian Brown, BBC weather presenter, said: "With the heat and humidity building over the next few days, it is possible we could see that record beaten again this week."

"The reason for the intense heat is an area of high pressure acting like a heat dome, trapping the hot air coming up from the continent," Brown added.

England broke its record twice in one day - with a provisional temperature of 36.7C in Merryfield, Somerset, beating the 36.4C (97.52F) recorded in Yeovilton, also in Somerset, hours earlier.

Wales also recorded its hottest June day with 35.9C (96.62F) provisionally recorded in Cardiff.

Scotland recorded its hottest day of the year so far, with a provisional temperature of 31.2C (88.16F) in Threave, as did Northern Ireland where it provisionally recorded 30.8C (87.44F) in Castlederg.

A red extreme heat warning is in effect for parts of southern England and Wales, with another red warning issued for London and parts of south-east England on Friday.

The extreme heat is making an impact: a hosepipe ban has been brought into effect in Kent, six NHS trusts have declared critical incidents and travel has been disrupted across several rail networks.

Further afield, the heatwave has spread across Europe - France, Spain, Germany and other parts of the continent have been experiencing high temperatures.

The Met Office also warns of delays on roads, trains and planes.
