New all-terrain police vehicle to patrol beaches

Sussex Police is deploying a new all-terrain vehicle (ATV) on Brighton's beaches to support its seafront patrols.

The ATV will primarily be out at night and during the early hours in order to "keep the public safe, deter crime and provide a highly visible police presence", the force said.

The specialist vehicle will patrol the shingle and has with blue lights, a powerful spotlight and high-powered LED lighting.

Ch Insp Dan Hiles described its aim as "making it clear to anyone looking to cause harm that they have nowhere to hide".

He added: "Brighton seafront is enjoyed by millions of people every year, and we want everyone to feel safe while visiting.

"This new vehicle provides officers with another important tool in the continued efforts to reduce offending in the area.

"It also complements existing tactics already in place, including drones and live facial recognition technology."

Brighton divisional commander Adam Hays said the ATV gave officers "the ability to take our patrols further onto the beach and respond quickly when people need us".

"If you're thinking of committing a crime on Brighton seafront, think again," he added.

"Expect to be seen, expect us to respond and expect us to take action."
