Ex-police detective charged with sexual assault

A former West Yorkshire Police officer has been charged with sexual assault.

Melanie Baker, who previously served as a detective sergeant based in the Kirklees district, has been charged with one count of sexual assault by penetration.

West Yorkshire Police said the alleged offence is said to have taken place against a woman in Wakefield on 6 August 2009.

Baker, who is due to appear at Leeds Magistrates' Court on 7 October, was off duty at the time of the alleged incident, police said. She has since retired from the force.
