Repair work to start on busy motorway interchange

Major work is due to begin on a busy motorway interchange.

Temporary lane closures and traffic lights on entry and exit slip roads at junction 14 of the Almondsbury Interchange on the M5 near Bristol will be in force overnight between 21:00 BST and 06:00 until 17 September.

The closures mark the start of several months of work at the interchange where the M4 and M5 meet.

National Highways said permanent repairs were needed after temporary fixes were made in 2024.

National Highways said the work would prevent future emergency closures and would see repairs carried out to concrete and street lights replaced.

Cameras will also be installed, along with a new safety barrier.

From 21 September, the M4 J20 westbound to the M5 J15 northbound section of the interchange will be closed for surveys overnight for two nights. There will be a full closure of this section from 11 October to December.

Traffic will be diverted via the M5 southbound junction 16.

National Highways has told drivers to expect delays and to plan their journeys.

Further closures around the interchange are planned from December into February of 2027.
