Firefighters tackled the blaze at St Peter and the Waterfront in Plymouth

Fire crews have been battling a blaze in a top-floor flat on Plymouth waterfront.

The alarm was raised at 16:55 BST with people reporting flames and smoke pouring from the St Peter and the Waterfront property, said Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

Fire engines from across Plymouth, including Plympton, Camels Head, Crownhill, Greenbank, Ivybridge and Yelverton, went to the scene, joined by a crew from Saltash.

Crews used hose reel jets, a high-powered jet and an aerial ladder platform to reach the upper floor. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus also worked to bring the blaze under control. There were no casualties said the fire service.

Group Commander Simon Carey from the fire service, said: "We've got several breathing apparatus teams in the property extinguishing the fire, damping down and also checking for fire spread throughout the building, but thankfully we've managed to contain it to the affected flat."

Residents were able to get out safely before crews arrived, and investigations into the cause are under way.

Carey added: "If people could just avoid the area due to the traffic congestion and keep doors and windows shut while we're dealing with the incident."
