A 92-year-old man accused of killing his wife has appeared in court.

Laurence Billam is charged with murdering his 87-year-old wife, Shirley Billam, at their sheltered apartment in Millbrook Lane, Exeter in April.

On Thursday he appeared in person at Exeter Crown Court for a 10 minute hearing before Judge Robert Linford

A trial has been scheduled for 1 and 2 October and Billam was remanded in custody.

At an earlier hearing, prosecutors said Billam is alleged to have smothered his wife at their sheltered accommodation before attempting to take his own life.

Police were called to the apartment at Edwards Court on 19 April after a report of concern for welfare. Officers and paramedics arrived to find Mrs Billam dead at the scene.
