A lorry has overturned following a multi-vehicle collision on the M1.

National Highways said the motorway was closed northbound, between junction 16 for Northampton and junction 18 for Rugby in Warwickshire, following a collision shortly after 22:00 BST on Tuesday.

It said all emergency services, including Northamptonshire Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, were in attendance and the road was likely to remain closed throughout the morning for investigation work and a "complex recovery operation".

According to traffic information providers Inrix, three lorries were involved in the collision and lanes three and four had been closed southbound, just past the incident.

Police have asked drivers to avoid the northbound section.

The force said its Serious Collision Investigation Unit would like to hear from any witnesses, or anyone with dashcam footage taken between 21:45 and 22:05, to get in touch.

"Any footage, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could prove vital to the investigation," it said.

Elsewhere in Northamptonshire, the A43 is closed southbound between junction 15a for Northampton/M1 and the A5 at Towcester due to a spillage.

National Highways said the spillage occurred after a diesel tank became detached from a heavy goods vehicle trailer and it had affected all lanes of the carriageway.

It said the "clean-up is currently taking place and an inspector will then be able to see if there is any damage to the road surface".
