The second phase of a £4.7m project to get more people walking, cycling and wheeling in Northampton will begin next week.

West Northamptonshire Council said phase two of the Abington Active Travel Scheme, along Park Avenue South and Bridgewater Drive, will start on Monday and is due to finish in autumn.

The idea is to get more people moving by using new, improved footways and segregated cycle lanes, and to reduce congestion and lower carbon emissions.

The council said it would work with the community as there would be some temporary road closures and diversions while the work was carried out.

Richard Butler, cabinet member for highways and transport at the Reform UK-led council, said it would "make a positive difference to how people get around this part of Northampton".

"By creating safer and more accessible routes, we are making it easier for people to walk, wheel and cycle as part of their everyday journeys," he said.

"We have listened to feedback from residents and will continue to work closely with the community while the work is carried out."

The council-led project is being constructed by Kier, and funded through the Active Travel Fund, the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, and local transport grants.

Phase Three will go ahead after it has been redesigned, following feedback received earlier this year.
