A man has died and four others have been treated by ambulance crews after a house fire in Stoke-on-Trent.

Staffordshire Police said officers were alerted to the blaze on Ridgway Road, in the Shelton area, by the fire service at about 12:50 BST.

Although the fire was quickly extinguished, a 75-year-old man was found dead, while four others were treated for the effects of smoke inhalation, with one woman in her 60s taken to hospital.

The force said the man's next of kin had been informed and it was working with fire investigators to determine how the blaze started.

It called on anyone with information to contact officers.
