Major resurfacing work planned for busy city road

Motorists have been warned of potential disruption when one of Leicester's busiest roads is resurfaced.

Highways bosses at Leicester City Council said they intended to repair damage to a one-mile (1.6km) stretch of Aylestone Road, between its junctions with Saffron Lane and Hampshire Road, and resurface the cycle lane.

Work on the £740,000 scheme is set to take place in phases starting on Saturday and running into mid-September.

Traffic will be diverted along Lutterworth Road, Glenhills Way and Saffron Lane when the road is required to be closed, the council said.

Assistant city mayor Geoff Whittle said: "While there will be road closures and disruption to some drivers, it's clearly important that one of the major routes into the city centre is kept in good condition.

"We will do all we can to ensure that work is completed on schedule and that disruption is kept to a minimum."

During the first phase of works, Aylestone Road will be fully closed in both directions, between Richmond Avenue and Boundary Road, from 07:00 BST on Saturday until 21 August.

The second phase of works - between Richmond Avenue and Hampshire Road - will be carried out in the evenings.

Aylestone Road will be shut in both directions between 19:00 and 06:00 from 24 August to 3 September though restrictions will be lifted at weekends, the council said.

A final phase of work, between Boundary Road and Saffron Lane, will also be carried out in the evenings.

It will start on 7 September and run until 15 September when the road will be fully closed between 19:00 and 06:00.
