Some residents of a town were wrongly told to put out their new recycling bins for collection because of an error.

Middlesbrough Council said the mistake meant people "in some areas" were advised to put out their paper and cardboard wheelie bins this week.

However, collection of the new red-lidded bins will not start until 30 June or even the week after for some households.

The council confirmed the mistake had occurred on calendars but that its crews would still empty the new bins.

They have been delivered to most households around the town as the council starts collecting recycling in line with new government rules that came into effect in April.

As part of the change, food waste will also be collected weekly and separately from other rubbish from 30 June.

The local authority said: "Bin calendars are now showing the new collections.

"Unfortunately, collections for this week, 23 to 26 June, are incorrect.

"Please ignore what is on your calendar and this week put out the bin you'd normally put out.

"If you usually print out your calendar, please wait and print out a new one after 26 June."
