Suspected phone thief jumps in pond during police chase

This is the moment a suspected mobile phone thief jumped into a London pond in a seeming attempt to evade police.

The Metropolitan Police's arrest of the 21-year-old was captured on CCTV and officers' body-worn cameras after the man fled on an e-bike and discarded multiple phones in the pond.

Officers waded into the water and fished out six phones wrapped in foil, a tactic used by thieves to block signals and hinder tracking.

The Met said the man's arrest last month was one of more than 700 arrests in the force's largest crackdown on mobile phone theft in London.
