WATCH: Work ongoing to repair forest fire road
Work is ongoing to repair a busy road through the New Forest that was at the centre of a large wildfire.
The A31, dual carriageway, has been shut between Ringwood and the M27 since a van fire on 9 August spread and eventually covered 400 acres (1.6 sq km), the equivalent of about 230 football pitches.
National Highways said the road could reopen at the weekend but businesses along the route have felt the impact, with some having to close completely.
David Satchell, the manager and landlord of the Red Shoot Inn, said his pub has managed to keep going with reduced staff numbers but they are desperate for the road to reopen.
"I know the highways have got a big job to do up there but we really do need it open now to salvage what's left of the summer holidays," he said.
At its peak the blaze needed the efforts of 120 firefighters to bring it under control and a big emergency services presence was maintained for more than a week.
Tree specialists were also involved creating a crucial fire break which helped to stop the flames from spreading.
