Two people die in house fire

Emergency services were called to a fire on Cragside Avenue, North Shields

A man and a woman have died in a house fire.

Fire crews were called to Cragside Avenue in North Shields shortly after 03:30 BST.

Northumbria Police said a man in his 40s and a woman in her 70s were found inside the property and treated by emergency services, but the pair died at the scene.

A man in his 70s was also found inside the house and was taken to hospital for treatment, the force added.

Two neighbouring properties were evacuated.

Witnesses to the fire are being asked to contact police

A section of the road remains closed and a cordon around the address is still in place.

Det Insp Barry McAtominey said the deaths were "absolutely devastating".

"We are asking anyone with information – no matter how small or insignificant it may seem – to come forward and share what they know."
