Workers offered jobs after a refinery was sold have been "left in limbo" by their new employer, a union has claimed.

Phillips 66 bought the Lindsey Oil Refinery in North Lincolnshire after previous owner Prax Group went into administration in June 2025. As part of the sale, 100 workers were offered jobs by the new owners.

Unite said they had been taken on under "temporary contracts for between three and six months" or "12 to 18-month statutory minimum contracts with no indication of permanent positions".

In response, Phillips 66 said due to the need to get the plant operating some people were hired and accepted short-term contracts and other roles would become permanent positions later.

The union said that the temporary contacts meant "that they could be laid off within four weeks without explanation if the company goes back on its word".

"Phillips 66 is leaving workers in limbo, prolonging an already stressful situation with the lack of clarity over their futures," Unite regional officer Mick Simpson said.

"The company needs to provide certainty to the workers over its plans for their long-term employment and provide them with full time contracts without delay."

Phillips 66 operates a refinery adjacent to the Lindsey site in North Killingholme.

A company spokesperson said: "We recognise and deeply sympathise with how difficult this process has been for everyone involved, and we are committed to providing well-being support for everyone at our site.

"We are communicating openly with all new hires, and we will continue to provide updates to them as we work together."
