Evacuated flat residents yet to return a year on
BBCSome residents at a block of flats in Worcestershire have still not returned to their homes more than a year after they were evacuated.
The emergency evacuation of the flats in Northwick Avenue, Worcester, took place on 4 June 2025, after serious fire safety concerns were identified.
Fire inspectors found dangerous cladding and issues with fire escapes, which saw 60 people, including eight children, evacuated in just 30 minutes.
Property management company FirstPort said the problems stemmed from building defects dating back to the building's conversion from a factory 20 years ago.
A spokesperson for FirstPort said: "We recognise the impact the past year has had on residents and remain committed to keeping them informed as the remediation programme progresses.
"Residents on the ground, first and second floors were able to return to their homes once additional safety measures were introduced and approved by the Fire and Rescue Service.
"Residents in the two top-floor properties remain in alternative accommodation while the necessary remediation works are completed."
The company said once final plans were approved, a full update would be shared with residents.
'Remarkable resilience'
Councillor Jessie Jagger, from Worcester City Council, welcomed the progress and praised the resilience of those affected.
She said: "It's encouraging to see that progress is now being made towards a long-term solution for residents at Barbourne Works.
"The last year has been incredibly difficult for those affected, but throughout that period residents have shown remarkable resilience and have come together to support one another."
Jagger added: "My priority has always been the wellbeing of residents, and I hope the next phase of works can now be delivered as quickly as possible, with clear communication and appropriate support for those who may be affected by the remediation programme."
