Former teacher charged with 1970s sex assaults

A former teacher has been charged with sexually assaulting a girl in the 1970s.

Pauline Newton, 77, of Browning Road in Ledbury, Herefordshire, was charged with four counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 16.

The incidents are alleged to have taken place between 1971 and 1973 at St Anne's Convent School - now St Anne's Catholic School - in Southampton.

Newton is due to appear at Southampton Crown Court on 11 August.

A report was made in December 2024 and an investigation was carried out by Hampshire police's Operation Marmion team, which investigates allegations of non-recent sexual abuse within institutions or by people of prominence.
