A fire which caused "significant damage" at a country park is believed to have been started by banned disposable BBQs, a council has said.

Swindon Borough Council's chiefs said the blaze began after BBQs were left overnight at Coate Water Country Park on Friday, damaging picnic tables, benches and fencing.

Disposable BBQs are banned in the town's country parks including Coate Water.

Writing on Facebook, a council spokesperson said: "Please help us protect our green spaces by following the rules and disposing of waste responsibly."

They added that significant damage was caused at the site.

"Items were left behind overnight, leading to a fire that required attendance from the fire service.

"Disposable BBQs are not permitted anywhere in our country parks. If you'd like to have a BBQ, designated BBC areas are available to hire at selected parks, including Coate Water and Lydiard Park," they added.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has been approached for comment.
