Arson arrest after fire ravages Grade II listed pub

A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a Grade II listed pub was severely damaged by fire.

Crews from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service were called to the The Worlds End Pub in Tilbury, Thurrock, at 15:30 BST on Wednesday.

The fire service said it was brought under control by 18:30 but firefighters remained at the scene on Fort Road throughout the evening to check for hot spots and make sure the area was safe.

Essex Police said the man, in his 20s, "remains in custody for questioning and our investigation continues".

Fire crews tackle blaze at The Worlds End Pub

The force said it was called shortly after 16:40 on Wednesday.

Officers appealed for anyone with information or footage to get in touch.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze will be carried out once the site is safe, the fire service said.

The public house, which has been closed for three months, has been Grade II listed by Historic England since 1974.
