'Essential' revamp at Grade II listed library

A temporary library is to open later so residents can continue to access services while major work continues at Lancaster Central Library.

The work is "essential" to protect the future of the Grade II listed building, which was built on Market Square in 1932, Lancashire County Council said.

The temporary library, at White Cross Business Park on Quarry Road, is in walking distance of the library and will open six days a week.

Lancaster Central Library is expected to reopen in spring 2027.

People who visit the temporary library will be able to choose from more than 2,000 books to borrow, use computers and access the internet.

There will also be printing facilities, a children's area and a space for events.

Baby Bounce and Rhyme sessions are already running at White Cross and have been well attended on Wednesdays.

Community groups that used Lancaster Central Library, which shut on 12 August, are now meeting at The Centre at St Thomas' Church.

County councillor Ella Worthington said: "I'd like to thank residents for their patience and support while this essential work is carried out.

"The investment will mean the library can continue serving residents for many years to come."
