A detainee absconded while being escorted from Campsfield Immigration Removal Centre.

The Home Office said the individual, who was under guard at the time, escaped staff from the Oxfordshire site on Tuesday.

A spokesperson said "all possible steps" were being taken to trace and re-detain the escapee.

Immigration Enforcement's criminal and financial Investigation teams are leading the search for the individual, who is not believed to pose a risk to the public.

Campsfield, near Kidlington, reopened in December 2025 after a £70m refurbishment, having been closed in 2018 following years of problems including riots, escapes and complaints about conditions.

The Home Office has since submitted plans to more than double the centre's capacity from 160 to 400 bed spaces, a proposal that has faced opposition from local MPs, residents and campaigners.
