Speed safety calls after village car crash
Local Democracy Reporting ServiceCampaigners have called for the speed limit on a village road to be reduced following a crash that left a car on its roof.
The incident took place on the B6265 at Little Ouseburn, between Boroughbridge and Green Hammerton, on Thursday. Nobody was reported to be seriously injured.
Residents have since said they feel the 60mph limit on the stretch through the village is too high and have called for the limit to be reduced to 30mph.
Arnold Warneken, councillor for the area, said he had met with highways officers four times at the site and added that "at locations like this, speed limits must be reviewed".
One resident, who asked not to be named, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "The driver was extremely fortunate to walk away and it is difficult not to think that next time the outcome could be far worse.
"This stretch of road, particularly around the village turning, presents a clear safety risk."
They said the road was regularly used by pedestrians, cyclists and motorists and that many believed "the current speed limit is simply too high for the road conditions and the junction".
Warneken said the parish council had repeatedly asked for a speed limit reduction.
"We cannot keep ignoring these concerns. How much further do we have to go before there is a fatality?" he said.
He said he had contacted officers at North Yorkshire Council and the parish council with the aim of setting up a meeting to discuss the issue.
