Firefighters rescue baby otters from storm drain

Firefighters rescued three "very cold and extremely hungry" baby otters from a storm drain in Nottinghamshire.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to Lantern Lane, near East Leake, at 21:34 BST on Wednesday after a person reported hearing noises coming from a drain.

The service said firefighters safely removed the otters before they were taken to Linjoy Wildlife Sanctuary in Etwall, Derbyshire, by a member of the public.

On Thursday, Lindsay Newell, from Linjoy Wildlife Sanctuary, said the otters would be transported to Stapeley Grange - an RSPCA-run wildlife centre in Cheshire.

Newell said when the otters arrived on Wednesday evening at about 23:20 they were "cold, hungry and looking really poorly".

However, she said the otters had "come round" after having some milk as well as being in a warm environment.

A spokesperson for East Leake Fire Station said: "The vet told us the otters were very cold and extremely hungry.

"They are now being hand-fed and cared for until they are strong enough to return to the wild."
