Police and fire to investigate cause of blaze

A joint fire and police investigation is to be carried out once a blaze at a bathroom showroom has been fully extinguished.

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service initially declared a major incident during the fire at the Kitchen and Bathroom Store on Selbourne Road in Luton at about 06:00 BST on Saturday.

A total of 10 fire engines and three aerial platforms were among the resources sent and crews remained at the scene overnight to dampen down hotspots and extinguish remaining pockets of fire - with one crew remaining at the scene throughout Sunday.

On social media, the service said everyone had "worked incredibly hard" to bring the fire under control and stop it spreading.

A Bedfordshire Police spokesperson said on Sunday it would be working with the fire service to investigate the cause of the blaze.

Residents in nearby properties were evacuated but allowed to return home at 17:45 on Saturday and road closures remain in place around the Selbourne Road area.

One firefighter was said to have suffered a minor injury before being treated and was able to remain at the scene.

As a result of the fire, some people in the area were warned they may experience low to no water pressure and were advised to avoid using electrical appliances that use water, such as washing machines and dishwashers.

On Sunday, Affinity Water said some customers could still be experiencing lower pressure than normal.
