Town 'proud' despite Town of Culture decision
BBCA Shropshire town said it is "immensely proud" despite not being shortlisted for the UK Town of Culture 2028 competition.
Telford sought the title for its 60th birthday year when applications opened earlier this year, but although the bid didn't progress to the next stage, the council has thanked the bid for bringing communities together.
Telford & Wrekin Council said: "The bid has successfully highlighted the Borough's unique story and strengthened plans already underway to celebrate the town's 60th anniversary in 2028."
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy announced a shortlist of 15 towns on Thursday, but none of the ones chosen were from the West Midlands.
The council said the expression of interest brought together communities, cultural organisations, artists, businesses and education providers to showcase Telford's heritage, creativity and ambition for the future.
Council leader councillor Lee Carter said: "While we are naturally disappointed not to have been shortlisted for Town of Culture 2028, we remain immensely proud of the bid and the way communities across Telford and Wrekin came together to support it."
Councillor Angela McClements said the town's ambition does not change because of the result.
She added: "The process has helped us shine a light on the people, places and organisations that make our Borough special, and many of the ideas that emerged through the bid will continue to influence our plans for 2028.
"Residents can look forward to a programme of events and activities that celebrate 60 years of Telford while recognising the rich heritage of the towns, villages and communities that make up our Borough."
