Food waste trucks named Chompy Wompy and Binderella

A city's new food waste trucks have been given names including Chompy Wompy, Binderella and Nomatron 3000 following a school competition.

Hundreds of entries were submitted by children across Southampton, with six winners chosen by the Lord Mayor.

The other winning entries were Bin Appetit, FRED and Foody Trudy.

Southampton City Council said the project aimed to make sustainability "fun" and "accessible" and encourage lifelong green habits.

The names will be added to the fleet in the coming weeks.

The competition was designed to encourage younger residents to think about food waste and environmental responsibility, while giving the city's new collection vehicles a playful identity.

Kate Brosnan, head teacher at Mansbridge Primary School, said the competition had created a real "buzz" among pupils.

"Seeing their ideas brought to life on a real truck has given them a genuine sense of pride and excitement about looking after the environment," she said.

Winning entrants included Marley from St John's Primary School for Chompy Wompy, Izzy from Tanner's Brook Primary School for Binderella, and Athena-Victoria from Kanes Hill Primary School for Bin Appetit.

Esmae from Mansbridge Primary School won for FRED, while Freddie from Freemantle Academy came up with Nomatron 3000 and Josephine from Swaythling Primary School created Foody Trudy.
