Driver high on drugs killed mum-of-two in crash
Family handoutA drug dealer who killed a mum-of-two when he crashed while high on heroin and crack cocaine has been jailed for more than 20 years.
Lee Rance, 44, sped past police officers on Royal Artillery Way, Southend-on-Sea, before smashing into a tree moments later on 20 May.
His passenger, 37-year-old Carly Hicks, who was described by her family as a "beautiful soul", died from the catastrophic injuries she suffered in the crash.
A jury at Basildon Crown Court found Rance, from nearby Shoeburyness, guilty of causing her death by dangerous driving and possessing cocaine and heroin with intent to supply.
On Thursday, he was sentenced to 20 years and three months in prison, and disqualified from driving for a further decade.
A police officer spotted Rance's Mini being driven at speed at 11:30 BST and found it wrecked off the road moments later.
Hicks, who was in the passenger seat, was taken to hospital but died from her injuries.
Essex PoliceIn a statement released after sentencing, the victim's family said she was "an incredible mother" who would be "missed beyond words".
"Some of Carly's best qualities were her ability to see the good in others and her kindness, even if others did not deserve it," they said.
"She had an infectious smile and a distinctive laugh you could recognise anywhere."
Essex Police said despite being disqualified from driving, Rance, of Frobisher Way in Shoeburyness, had taken a cocktail of drugs before getting behind the wheel.
Officers found cocaine and heroin in the vehicle, a drugs line mobile phone and a prohibited firearm, of which he was also found guilty of possessing by the jury.
Investigating officer Det Sgt Sam Nason said: "Carly was a much‑loved daughter, mother and family member whose life was cruelly cut short by Rance's selfish and reckless actions."
