Council considers new operator for leisure centre

A council is considering taking on a new operator to run a Barrow leisure centre to ensure it remains remains "a thriving and accessible community asset".

Westmorland and Furness Council said it was "committed to securing the long-term financial sustainability" of Barrow Park Leisure Centre.

"By building on the centre's existing strengths, the proposal aims to safeguard key services, support ongoing investment in the facility, and maintain a strong focus on accessibility, inclusion and community wellbeing," a spokesperson said.

The local authority said all leisure centre employees were "fundamental to the delivery of high-quality services" and would be supported throughout any transition.

"If a decision is taken to proceed with the recommendation, the council will consider the steps necessary to implement that decision in accordance with its usual processes and procedures," a spokesperson said.

"The leisure centre plays an important role in supporting health, wellbeing and social connection, and the ambition is to preserve and enhance opportunities for people of all ages to stay active, healthy and connected, while ensuring the facility is financially resilient for the years ahead."

The council is set to vote on the proposal for Tuesday, 8 September.

"Further communications will be issued in due course."
