A man has been arrested after a pedestrian died when she was hit by a car on the outskirts of Featherstone.

Emergency services were called to the junction of Wakefield Road and Common Side Lane just before 18:40 BST on Tuesday, after the woman was struck by a Cupra Born while crossing the road.

The 40-year-old, from Pontefract, was given emergency treatment but died at the scene, West Yorkshire Police said.

The driver, a 26-year-old Pontefract man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in custody.

Det Sgt Nina Roper, of the Major Collision Inquiry Team, said: "A number of inquires remain ongoing into this incident which has sadly resulted in a woman losing her life.

"Officers are supporting her family and we are appealing for any witnesses and relevant footage showing the incident.

"We would also like to hear from anyone who saw the Cupra and the manner in which it was being driven in the moments before the collision took place."
