Outdoor pool to reopen after sewage overflow

A bathing pool which was closed following a leak from the site's toilets is expected to reopen.

The States of Guernsey said it had been directed by Environmental Health to close the Ladies' Pool at La Vallette on 2 September after tests revealed foul drainage from the toilets had been found in public areas and the pool.

The Bathing Pools, the charity which oversees the site, previously said the cesspit, that served both the public toilets and cafe had "overfilled".

It announced on Friday that "Environmental Health officers are satisfied" that the public toilets and the cafe toilets "pose no further risk to water quality at the Ladies' Pool". The pool is expected to reopen on Wednesday.

The charity said actions were taken to identify and address the problem, including dye testing.

It said the cafe could now open as normal from Saturday but as an extra precaution the States of Guernsey had schedule a cleaning of the Ladies' Pool on Tuesday.

The charity said the Children's Pool, Horseshoe Landing and Gents' Pool would remain open and available to the public, other than scheduled cleans.

The Bathing Pools said it would continue to work closely with the States of Guernsey, Environmental Health and relevant parties to make sure appropriate monitoring and safeguards were in place.

"We are also progressing a number of measures to further strengthen the arrangements and ensure that an issue of this nature cannot happen again," it said.
